Cost Guidelines for Visiting International Students

Visiting international students at Cornell pay differing tuition and fees, depending on the nature of their program.

Exchange Program 

Cornell University tuition is waived for exchange students who are enrolled on the basis of exchange agreements between Cornell University and their home university. 

As an international exchange student, you are responsible for payment of housing, meals, books and supplies, optional leisure activities, the student activity fee, Cornell health insurance, travel and any personal expenses incurred while you are on your exchange. 

Here are some estimates to help you plan for your exchange. 

Estimated Expenses for ONE SEMESTER, Spring 2018: $10,518 total 

  • Housing: $4,472 

  • Meals: $3,010 

  • Books and Supplies: $491 

  • Mandatory Student Activity Fee: $129.50 

  • Mandatory Health Insurance: $1,380.50 

  • Miscellaneous Expenses: $1,036 

 

Estimated Expenses for FULL YEAR, Fall 2017/Spring 2018: $21,036 total 

  • Housing: $8,943 

  • Meals: $6,019 

  • Books and Supplies: $982 

  • Mandatory Student Activity Fee: $259 

  • Mandatory Health Insurance: $2,761 

  • Miscellaneous Expenses: $2,072 

 

Visiting Program 

Visiting students are responsible for paying Cornell University tuition for the semester(s) they are enrolled. Tuition rates can be found at the Office of the Bursar's website under Undergraduate Tuition. Visiting students are not eligible for financial aid from Cornell University.  

The following figures are the estimated expenses for visiting international students. (They do not include the cost of travel within the United States or international travel, because those amounts vary considerably for each student.)

  • Tuition: $26,306 

  • Housing: $4,471.50 

  • Meals: $3,009.50 

  • Books and Supplies: $491 

  • Mandatory Student Activity Fee: $129.50 

  • Mandatory Health Insurance: $1,380.50 

  • Miscellaneous Expenses: $1,036 

 

Estimated Expenses for FULL YEAR, Fall 2017/Spring 2018: $73,648 total 

  • Tuition: $52,612 

  • Housing: $8,943 

  • Meals: $6,019 

  • Books and Supplies: $982 

  • Mandatory Student Activity Fee: $259 

  • Mandatory Health Insurance: $2,761 

  • Miscellaneous Expenses: $2,072 

 

Provost’s International Research Internship Program 

If you participate in the Provost’s International Research Internship Program, you will receive a Provost’s Tuition Scholarship. You will be responsible for 25 prercent of the usual cost of tuition, at the Part-Time study rate.

For 2017-2018, the tuition cost to participate in PIRIP is $4,230 per semester, and $2,115 for the summer. 

PIRIP students are also responsible for paying for student health insurance, housing, meals, and transportation. 

 

J-1 Student Intern Program 

There is a $500 administrative fee for the J-1 student intern program.

Students are responsible for securing their own health insurance that meets J-1 federal regulations.
